Unraveling Calf Diarrhoea Through Metagenomics: A Study Powered by GeneMind Sequencing

Date: Jan 14,2026 Views: 77

A recent study published in Microbiome (IF: 12.7), led by Prof. Xiaoping Luo from Inner Mongolia Academy of Agricultural and Animal Husbandry Sciences, and Mr. Yongfeng Liu from GeneMind Biosciences characterizes gut microbiome dysbiosis in diarrhoeic calves from Inner Mongolia farms.

Employing 16S rRNA and metagenomic sequencing, the research elucidated a clear correlation between diarrhoea severity and microbial imbalance. Key findings include the identification of Escherichia coli (bin.216) utilizing non-canonical virulence pathways and an under-characterized Streptococcus ruminantium (bin.338) as potential pathogens. The Escherichia phage VpaE1_ev108 was further linked to disease progression. Notably, antibiotic resistance genes were prevalent even on farms without direct antibiotic use.

Based on these findings, the study proposes a novel therapeutic strategy combining phage-mediated targeted therapy with probiotic transplantation. This approach aims to reduce reliance on antimicrobials and maintain microbial homeostasis by reconstructing the ecological network.

The metagenomic sequencing for this research was completed using GeneMind's SURFSeq 5000 platform. GeneMind research team made key contributions to this work: Xiaochao Zhao is a co-first author, Yongfeng Liu is a co-corresponding author, and Juan Lai and Lei Sun are also listed as authors.
